Maine voters will decide on four candidates for the U.S. Senate on Election Day

2 minutes, 30 seconds Read

Three challengers want to replace independent US Senator Angus King.

Incumbent King and two of his challengers, Republican Demi Kouzounas and Democrat David Costello, took the debate stage at the CBS13 studios last week.

The three candidates clashed on issues such as inflation and the economy.

“The stock market is at record levels, but I don't think people are feeling that in their daily lives,” King said.

“We got the inflation rate down to under 3%, so that has calmed down,” Costello said.

“I think the opposite is true. When you talk to the average Mainer, the people who struggle every day,” Kouzounas said.

Another issue close to the hearts of many voters in Maine and across the country concerns reproductive rights.

Three out of four candidates expressed their views on abortion during CBS13's debate, with all three supporting Roe vs. Wade.

“I don’t think it should be left to the states. I don't believe a woman's right to have control over her body should depend on her zip code. And fundamentally these are medical decisions and I think it should be left up to the woman and her doctor should be the one to make those decisions,” King said.

“I am also a pro-choice advocate and agree with the senator on this matter. I think profitability is an issue and I think we need to look at this issue a little more closely. But let’s give women real choices, free birth control, free IVF,” Kouzounas said.

“We could have codified Roe v. Wade by a 51-vote margin, but I understand he was opposed to eliminating the filibuster rule for that particular piece of legislation,” Costello said.

The three candidates also discussed their views on immigration reform.

“Why would you be okay with women being killed by illegals you encounter? They want more immigration. Let's do legal immigration like my parents did. Instead of one million a year, we should focus on three million a year. I agree. At least we check people,” Kouzounas said.

“These are not people coming over the wall or swimming the river, these are people showing up at ports of entry and saying, 'I have a credible fear of persecution in my home country.' This is being abused and I agree and am happy to hear the openness to legal immigration that built this country,” King said.

“The immigration system is broken and so I think that whatever the bill comes through in the next Congress, if there is an area that has bipartisan support, it will be a credible bill to address the border crisis,” Costello said.

The candidates addressed many other issues, including the war in the Middle East.

The fourth candidate, independent Jason Cherry, did not qualify for the debate according to our criteria, but is also on the ballot.

The winner will represent Maine in the U.S. Senate for the next six years.

Maine's other senator, Republican Susan Collins, is not up for re-election until 2026.
