Voters in Wisconsin go to the polls on Tuesday to cast their ballots in a critical presidential transition state and decide which party controls the Senate.

The winner of the presidential contest receives the state's ten electoral votes. Polls close at 8:00 p.m. local time.

State significance

Wisconsin was a solidly Democratic state until 2016, when former President Donald Trump won it by one percentage point. Four years later, President Joe Biden took back the majority by around 20,000 votes.

Republican Sen. Ron Johnson was re-elected in 2022 by around 26,000 votes, underscoring the state's competitiveness, while liberal Justice Janet Protasiewicz won a seat on the state Supreme Court in 2023 by a whopping 11 points over conservative Justice Dan Kelly.

Democratic Senator Tammy Baldwin is also running for a third term against wealthy banker Eric Hovde. Baldwin is known for his vaunted voter service program, but Republicans have hoped that Hovde could support the party's investment in the campaign with money from his vast personal coffers.

Counties are colored red or blue when the percentage of expected votes reaches a set threshold. This threshold varies by state and is based on past voting reporting patterns and expectations about how voting will occur this year.
