ABC News predicts former President Donald Trump will win Texas.

As the winner of the presidential race, he would win the state's 40 electoral votes, making the state a significant prize. Polling stations closed at 7 p.m. local time.

State significance

Texas has voted for the Republican presidential candidate since 1980, although former President Donald Trump won the state by nearly six points in 2020.

In the Senate race, Democrat Rep. Collin Allred tried to unseat incumbent Republican Sen. Ted Cruz.

Democrats sought to flip the Senate seat and picked Allred as a prominent candidate to replace Cruz, although political analysts said they believe the seat still leans Republican.

Voters also chose who will fill the 18th Congressional District seat previously held by Democrat Sheila Jackson Lee, who died in July. Her daughter Erica Lee Carter is running in a separate special election to finish the final weeks of Jackson Lee's term.

Counties are colored red or blue when the percentage of expected votes reaches a set threshold. This threshold varies by state and is based on past voting reporting patterns and expectations about how voting will occur this year.
