Nevada voters go to the polls Tuesday to cast their ballots in a critical presidential election state. The state also hosts a top Senate race and several closely contested House races in and around Las Vegas.

The winner of the presidential contest receives the state's six electoral votes. The elections end at 7:00 p.m. local time.

State significance

Nevada has voted for the Democratic presidential candidate in every election cycle since 2008, although often by narrow margins. President Joe Biden overtook former President Donald Trump by more than 2 percentage points in 2020.

Thanks to a strong alliance with unions in the state, Democrats have built a strong base in Nevada. However, because of the state's heavy reliance on the tourism and hospitality industries, the economy there has been slower to recover from the pandemic than others, and inflation attacks against Vice President Kamala Harris have been particularly fierce there.

In a sign of the state's competitiveness, Nevada re-elected Democratic Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto, but also voted for Republican Joe Lombardo, who would replace then-Democratic Gov. Steve Sisolak in 2022.

Nevada is also hosting a pitch competition between Sen. Jacky Rosen, a Democrat seeking a second term, and Sam Brown, a war veteran whose serious injuries in Afghanistan were the focus of his race.

Rosen won her first term in 2018 by 5 points in the blue wave.

Additionally, there are three competitive house races in Nevada and the Las Vegas area.

Counties are colored red or blue when the percentage of expected votes reaches a set threshold. This threshold varies by state and is based on past voting reporting patterns and expectations about how voting will occur this year.
