Voters in Nebraska head to the polls on Election Day to cast their votes in the presidential race as well as multiple rounds of voting for the U.S. Senate and U.S. House of Representatives.

At stake are the state's five electoral votes, two of which will be awarded to the statewide popular vote winner and the other three to the district.

Voters will also weigh in on two competing abortion ballot measures, one intended to create a fundamental right to abortion and the other to enshrine a 12-week ban.

Polling stations close between 7:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. local time.

State significance

Nebraska's unique electoral system has been the subject of debate this year as Republican lawmakers sought to transform it into a winner-take-all approach that would have benefited former President Donald Trump and risked a tie in the Electoral College.

Trump won nationally in 2020 by 17 percentage points over President Joe Biden. However, Biden won one electoral vote in Nebraska's 2nd Congressional District.

On the ballot are three U.S. House races and one Senate race between incumbent Republican Sen. Deb Fischer and independent candidate Dan Osborn.

There is also a ballot measure that, if passed, would amend the state constitution to create a fundamental right to abortion and prohibit government intervention until the fetus is viable, in cases where there is a significant likelihood that the fetus will die outside the uterus could survive, or if the abortion occurs According to the Secretary of State, this is necessary to protect the life or health of a pregnant patient.

However, a second ballot measure would enshrine a 12-week ban on abortion in the constitution, with exceptions for rape, incest and the life of the mother.

Counties are colored red or blue when the percentage of expected votes reaches a set threshold. This threshold varies by state and is based on past voting reporting patterns and expectations about how voting will occur this year.
