Harris campaign sends crowd to Howard University as vice president won't speak overnight

Donald Trump is likely close to securing a second term in the White House after winning two key battleground states just hours after polls closed.

Seven crucial swing states could have offered Kamala Harris different paths to securing 270 votes in the Electoral College, but the vice president lost North Carolina and Georgia as of 1 a.m. ET, significantly narrowing the path to victory.

Counting is still ongoing in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Arizona and Nevada.

At the Harris watch party at Howard University in Washington, D.C., senior campaign adviser Cedric Richmond said the vice president would not speak tonight but would address supporters tomorrow.

Meanwhile, in Palm Beach, there are scenes of cheering from Trump supporters as they await the Republican candidate's remarks.

The NBC News exit poll showed some preliminary results Clues to what voters had on their minds when deciding who to vote for – the economy and the state of U.S. democracy were among the top topics mentioned.

35 percent said democracy was their biggest issue, while slightly fewer, 31 percent, said the economy. Abortion was the top issue for 14 percent of voters, while 11 percent cited immigration. Four percent said foreign policy was most important to them.
