Latest news: Steelers trade EDGE Preston Smith

The Pittsburgh Steelers completed their second trade of the day by acquiring EDGE Preston Smith from the Green Bay Packers. according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

According to Schefter, Pittsburgh is sending a seventh-round pick to Green Bay in exchange for Smith. Matt Schneidman of The Athletic reported that the pick is a 2025 seventh-round pick.

The team also traded for WR Mike Williams from the New York Jets today.

While the Steelers are missing EDGE's TJ Watt and Alex Highsmith, their play has been impacted by injuries to Nick Herbig and DeMarvin Leal. OLB Markus Golden also retired before the start of the season, and without Herbig, Jeremiah Moon is Pittsburgh's No. 3 fullback. Although Herbig could return after the bye week, this is clearly still an area where the Steelers wanted to add additional depth, and they will do that by signing a veteran in Smith.

Smith is in his sixth year with the Packers after spending the first four seasons of his career with the Washington Commanders. He is an accomplished pass rusher with 68.5 sacks in his career, but he has played just 54% of Green Bay's snaps on defense this season, recording 19 tackles and 2.5 sacks.

Smith was originally a second-round pick of Washington in the 2015 NFL Draft out of Mississippi State and had 24.5 sacks in four seasons with Washington before signing with Green Bay as a free agent. His current contract, which he renegotiated before this season to reduce his 2024 compensation by $2.4 million, according to Over The Cap, runs through the 2026 season, with a voided year in 2027.

His best season was with the Packers in 2019, when he recorded a career-high 12 sacks. Despite getting older, Smith is still a productive player as he had eight sacks last season and 8.5 sacks in 2022, and he should give the Steelers another threat at quarterback. Acquiring Smith also takes some of the pressure off of Watt and Highsmith, and his ability to come off the bench can help keep them on track as Pittsburgh has played all six division games and is looking to advance to the playoffs.
