BATON ROUGE – LSU basketball senior point guard Last-Tear Poa has filed a lawsuit against U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, according to a report from On3.

According to the report, Poa is filing a lawsuit against immigration officials for denying her application as a P-1A athlete “on the grounds that her future competitions would not be internationally recognized.”

Poa is from Melbourne, Australia, currently living in the state and playing at LSU on an F-1 student visa. She has more than 200,000 social media followers, but since “Name, Image and Likeness” was introduced to the college athletics scene a few years ago, it has been difficult for international student-athletes to get zero-deal deals.

The senior guard was not present for LSU's first game last Thursday night, and team officials confirmed to The Daily Advertiser that her absence was unrelated to the lawsuit.

According to U.S. immigration guidelines, international students on an F-1 student visa are prohibited from engaging in employment while in the country. Non-direct employment NIL deals are contractual agreements between student-athletes and companies and organizations to provide a service in exchange for compensation. This contradicts immigration policy.

Poa is LSU coach Kim Mulkey's most experienced point guard on this season's team, having played in Mulkey's system the past two seasons. Last season was her best season statistically, averaging 4.9 points per game, but her biggest impact came on defense, where she became known for her offense.
