Lara Trump announces changes to the electoral process after the inauguration

3 minutes, 13 seconds Read

Lara Trump, co-chair of the Republican National Committee (RNC) and wife of Donald Trump's son Eric, said the Republican-controlled government should consider changing the US electoral process after her father-in-law's inauguration.

Speaking to Fox News host Sean Hannity on Wednesday after her father-in-law's historic victory about how to make the election process more secure and transparent, Lara Trump said that with Donald Trump in office, there will be a GOP majority in the Senate and possibly the Senate In the House of Representatives, the Republican Party finally has a chance to address the issues “on which 99 percent of Americans agree.” According to Lara Trump and Hannity, this includes proof of citizenship and voter ID cards.

“We don’t have a perfect system right now,” she told Hannity. “We have to get through this system, we have to play the hand we were dealt. You now have election season instead of election day and a lot of nuances across the country that make it very confusing and really concerning for a lot of people.”

“Maybe now is the time to move forward after the inauguration of Donald Trump and maybe we will have something that will be passed so that we can have a comprehensive federal election process that every state adheres to and we feel very comfortable across the country “” she suggested.

While the details of this potential change to the US electoral process are sparse, the RNC co-chairman's proposal appears to confirm many experts' fears that Donald Trump's return to the White House could significantly transform American democracy. A “blanket federal election process” likely means a desire to standardize procedures at the national level rather than allowing each state to choose its own process. This could include standardizing deadlines for absentee voting, absentee voting and vote counting across the country.

Newsweek contacted RNC and Trump's 2024 campaign via email early Thursday morning, outside of regular work hours, for comment.

Lara Trump, standing next to her father-in-law as he gave his early victory speech in Florida on Tuesday night, was one of the leading figures within the Republican Party to express doubts about the fairness and legitimacy of the electoral process approaching Election Day.

As the Associated Press reported, the RNC filed more than 100 lawsuits nationwide challenging various aspects of voting.

This should more effectively facilitate legal challenges should Donald Trump lose a close election.

While no evidence of widespread voting irregularities was found in the 2020 election, Donald Trump and his close allies have yet to abandon their false claims of massive voter fraud in the last election. Back in April, CNN reported that the RNC sent a written call to voters' phones on behalf of Lara Trump claiming that Democrats had committed “massive fraud” in the election.

The call said that “the chaos and questions of the 2020 election” should never happen again.

Donald Trump will officially take office on January 20, 2025, returning to the White House after four years out of power. He is only the second president in US history to serve two non-consecutive terms. In her concession speech, Vice President Kamala Harris called for a peaceful transfer of power in the coming weeks.

Donald Trump is expected to receive the support of a Republican-controlled Senate, while it is not yet clear which party will control the House of Representatives with dozens of races still to be called.
