Kevin Stefanski to Ken Dorsey: Reasons why Browns HC gave up on play-calling

The Cleveland Browns enter Week 8 of the NFL season with a lot of changes. Some appear to be permanent for the rest of the season, while others are subject to change:

Stefanski, who is handing over the reins to Dorsey, has some doubts about whether Mike Vrabel could be the team's next head coach.

According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Stefanski made the move to Dorsey in part because the timing worked with the move to Winston, but that was just one piece of the puzzle:

There was also a time management problem for Stefanski. The offense was struggling and Stefanski still spent most of his time working with that unit. If it didn't help, that time wasn't being used well.

For example, this move allowed Stefanski to attend more defensive meetings last week, giving him the opportunity to coach the entire team and, just as importantly, be available to the entire team.

There is a lot of logic in the reasons. Changing QB and play-caller in the same week creates a fresh start overall, and since it didn't work out, it makes sense to free up Stefanski's time.

Reading between the lines: “It’s just as important to be available to the entire team” seems to imply something. Whether it was just a general disconnect between Stefanski and the other two parts of his team (defense and special teams) or perhaps concerns from DC Jim Schwartz and special teams coordinator Bubba Ventrone, it appears that Rapoport heard concerns from Cleveland.

Rapoport also discussed Winston's history and Watson's future, noting that “all options are on the table” to move forward with their high-paid quarterback.
