Kamala Harris calls on Donald Trump to concede the election

Kamala Harris called Donald Trump on Wednesday to concede the presidential candidacy and urge him to be a president for “all Americans,” a campaign memo said.

Harris is scheduled to give a concession speech at Howard University later Wednesday.

In the memo, campaign manager Jen O'Malley Dillon said Harris was also committed to working with President Biden to ensure a peaceful transition to power – a clear nod to the violent transfer of power in 2020.

A Trump campaign spokesman confirmed that Harris had called to congratulate him on his “historic victory.”

“President Trump recognized Vice President Harris for her strength, professionalism and tenacity throughout the campaign, and both leaders agreed on the importance of uniting the country,” said spokesman Steven Cheung.

O'Malley Dillon thanked her campaign staff for building a “first-rate, historic presidential campaign in virtually 90 days.”

“They faced unprecedented headwinds and obstacles that were largely beyond our control,” she wrote. “We knew this was going to be a mistake game, and it was.”

She also noted that the rightward shift toward Trump was less pronounced in battleground states, arguing that this showed the campaign was having an impact in countering the national mood.

“It speaks both to the work you have done and to the magnitude of the challenge that we ultimately failed to overcome,” she wrote.

O'Malley Dillon also said that losing the race was “unfathomably painful.”

“It’s hard,” she wrote. “It will take a long time to process. But the work of protecting America from the impact of a Trump presidency begins now.”

Trump is poised to win all seven battleground states, although the races in Arizona and Nevada have not yet been called. Republicans also took control of the U.S. Senate.
