John Oliver chokes up as he urges voters to elect Kamala Harris: 'I'm an immigrant'

On the final episode of Last Week Tonight before tomorrow's US election, John Oliver delivered an emotional pitch for Vice President Kamala Harris. He said Kamala Harris' policies aren't perfect, but he would vote for her. “Wouldn’t it be great to live in a world where Trump is no longer an active threat?” he said, fighting back tears. He said he was an immigrant and loved the country. British-born John Oliver took American citizenship in 2019 and took part in the presidential election for the second time.
“Look, I love this country. I am an immigrant. I chose to be here. In the words of the late, great Lee Greenwood: I am proud to be an American. And I argue that there is nothing more American than having a healthy, adversarial relationship with those in power, even if you voted for them.”
“I know he would put us through hell before he left the stage, but when the dust settled he would have lost two elections in a row and would be campaigning next time as an 82-year-old. I think he would be ready,” he said. “And doesn’t that sound great? I know the problems of which he is a symptom would of course remain, but we would no longer have to deal with him. Wouldn’t it be great to live in a world where he’s no longer an active threat, but just a nuisance?”

“I really want to live in this world,” Oliver concluded. “And I hope that in the next 48 hours everyone does everything they can to make this world possible.”
On the Biden-Harris administration's policy toward the war in Gaza, he said: “Look, I understand why this is so difficult, and I know there are some who will not vote for Harris under any circumstances because of this issue.” “ “I wish Harris had done more to reach out to you this week than send Bill Clinton to basically scold you. That didn’t seem remotely helpful to me and honestly felt a bit like bullying.”
