John Oliver fought back tears as he expressed his hopes for the outcome of the US election.

The 2024 presidential election is coming to an end after a chaotic few weeks in which Donald Trump was widely mocked for a series of viral stunts and many celebrities expressed their support, including a rather surprising pick by former Republican politician Arnold Schwarzenegger.

In the latest episode of Last week tonightBritish-born comedian Oliver, who became a US citizen in 2019, focused his attention on the election with just a day to go and officially announced he would be voting for Kamala Harris.

He told viewers: “Elections alone are not efficient for big change, but they are absolutely necessary for it to ever happen.” Because it is the day when you essentially get to decide who you want to promote over the next four years and from where you want to promote it.”

Oliver became emotional as he continued: “Look, I love this country. I am an immigrant. I chose to be here. In the words of the late, great Lee Greenwood, “I am proud to be an American.” And I maintain that there is nothing more American than having a healthy, adversarial relationship with those in power, even if you voted for them. “

While Oliver typically uses his show to mock Trump, his speech showed the comedian in rare serious form as he said he believed a loss for Trump would mean he was “finished.”

“I know he would put us through hell before he left the stage, but when the dust settled he would have lost two elections in a row and would be campaigning next time as an 82-year-old,” he said Oliver added: “I think he'd be ready – and doesn't that sound great?”

He added: “I know the problems of which he is a symptom would of course remain, but we would no longer have to deal with him.” Wouldn't it be great to live in a world where he wasn't active “It's no longer a threat, but just a nuisance?”

Oliver said that he “wants to live in this world so badly” and explained: “I hope that in the next 48 hours everyone does everything they can to make this world possible.”
