Jackson State University's homecoming season is almost in full swing. This year, the highly anticipated homecoming parade will take place on campus and promises to be an exciting start to Saturday's football game.

The parade begins at 8 a.m. on Saturday, November 2nd on Dr. Robert Smith Sr. Parkway. Pro Football Hall of Famer and JSU alumnus Robert “Dr. Doom” Brazile serves as the parade’s grand marshal.

In recent years, the JSU homecoming parade has been held downtown. Homecoming Parade Committee Chairman Arron Richardson said the decision to move the parade back to campus was based on a desire to further highlight the JSU community.

The move will also allow for better flow with other Homecoming events on campus. The parade tradition of throwing away candy returns this year. Richardson said in recent years throwing candy into the crowd of spectators has been prohibited, but the parade's return to campus has made that tradition possible again.

Richardson said the JSU community has supported the parade's return to campus.

“When they found out we were going to have the parade back on campus, we were really embraced by the surrounding community,” Richardson said.

This year's JSU Homecoming theme is “Thee House Party,” a tribute to the popular '90s hip-hop duo Kid n' Play. The duo was the initiator of the “House Party” film series.

While JSU changes the homecoming theme each year, nostalgia is always the focus, especially for alumni who return to their alma mater to share stories and relive their college years. Richardson said he expects as many as 5,000 alumni to return for the festivities.

Richardson, who is chairing for the first time this year, thanked his fellow committee members who work tirelessly to plan the homecoming each year. He said JSU always tries to make homecoming bigger and better each year and the team is already thinking about next year's events.

“Yard Fest” will also be held at Legacy Garden on Friday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Richardson said this event is his favorite because it allows alumni to relive their time on campus.

“The alumni can come back and tell their stories about what happened to them during their stay at the Yard,” Richardson said. “They're coming back. They want to give something back. They want to have a great time. There is a party atmosphere. 'Thee House Party' is the best slogan we can have because we want to have a great time all week.” “
