Iowa City High 42, 5A No. 2 Bettendorf 23

Iowa City High got the crucial win it needed. Dawson Kahl ran in the Little Hawks' 42-23 win over 5A No. 2 Bettendorf for 129 yards and four touchdowns.

“It tells everyone in our locker room and gives us confidence that we belong on this top team,” fourth-year City High coach Mitchell Moore said. “There are a lot of good teams. There is a lot of parity in 5A football right now. And if that was the No. 1 team and the 8-0 team, we would definitely be on the field with them.”

City High opened the game with three touchdowns in the second quarter. Facing a fourth down and a score at the Bettendorf 3-yard line with just nine seconds left until halftime, Moore opted for the touchdown. City High senior quarterback Bobby Bacon threw a ball to senior tight end Parker Sutherland, who used every inch of his 6-foot-3 frame to push the ball across the goal line for a 28-yard lead. 10 to score at half time.

Bacon threw for 260 yards and two touchdowns, including a 49-yard strike to sophomore Chayse Newton. Kahl helped decide the game with touchdown runs of 23 and 6 yards in the fourth quarter.

Sutherland caught six passes for 89 yards, while 5-foot-6 tailback Gabe Egeland added 83 rushing yards.

City High defensive players Kane Willey and Raphael Etuma each registered sacks and Peter Pufall and Iyon Harris both collected interceptions for the Little Hawks' defense, giving the Bettendorf offense just nine first downs and 227 total yards.

Cedar Rapids Prairie 28, Iowa City West 21

Prairie rushed for 327 yards in the regular season finale at John Wall Field. This game was won in the first place, so give mega props to the big uglies as they call them, guys who never achieve fame.

That would be Roby Swartzendruber, fellow tackle Javen Donald, guards Justin Velky and Jace Tonne, center Aiden Packard, fullback Brandon Brune and tight ends David Fason and Bennett Koch. These guys got their way.

Brune had a touchdown run, tailback Quinton Alexander had two. Fason caught a 57-yard touchdown pass from Wyatt Eash as Prairie (4-5) took a 21-0 halftime lead and held on.

“We thought we could be more physical than them,” Prairie coach Kyle Knock said. “Then you’re also talking about taking the football out of their hands. If you can run six or seven minutes next to the clock…”

Time of possession was dominated by the Hawks, who held a high-octane West offense off the field to an average of 43.6 points.

Alexander finished the game with 93 yards on 15 carries. BJay Bush Jr. led the way with 125 yards on 14 carries, while Talan Jackson added 65 on 11 carries.

Butali Butali had 128 rushing yards and a touchdown for West (5-4). Quarterback Jack Wallace completed 16 of 21 passes for 139 yards and ran for a score.

The Trojans also ran back a blocked punt for a score. They played much of the game without leading receiver Mason Woods, who injured his leg on a play last week.

When sleeping on Benton Community, stop hitting the snooze button and open your eyes.

The Bobcats are a tough, tenacious football team that makes a habit of humiliating ranked teams. For the second time this season they have defeated a ranked opponent.

Benton played stingy defense and Dylan Lefebvere rushed for three touchdowns, including two in the final 3:24, to defeat No. 1 Williamsburg 21-0 and clinch the Class 3A, District 5 title at home Friday night .

“It was a great opportunity, a great team win,” Lefebvere said. “The coaches really pushed us this week. We wanted to win that. We want to become district champions. We’ve all wanted this all year long.”

5A No. 10 Ankeny 56, Cedar Rapids Washington 0

The second trip to Cedar Rapids in as many days didn't slow down the Ankeny football team.

After persistent lightning strikes Thursday night forced the Hawks and Cedar Rapids Washington to suspend the game after just over four minutes at Kingston Stadium, Ankeny wasted no time in taking control. The Hawks scored just four plays after play resumed and never looked back.

Ankeny (5-4) entered the week ranked No. 12 in the RPI rankings in Class 5A and may have done enough to secure a home playoff game when the matchups are released.

The Warriors finish Eric Addy's first year at the helm at 3-6.

On Thursday's final play, Ankeny broke off a big run to get into position. It appeared the Warriors had gotten a break when Caden Henkes fumbled just past the goal line, but Hawks offensive lineman Zach Breitbach jumped on the ball and scored first.

From that point on, it was all Ankeny. Coach Jeff Bauer's team scored three goals in the second quarter, the last coming on a 68-yard return after a blocked field goal. Riley McFadden grabbed the ball and brought it home on the final play of the first half, giving the visitors a 28-0 lead.

Henkes scored with a 3-yard run at the start of the third period, opening the break.

Ankeny ran the ball 33 times for 321 yards. The Hawks' defense, which got a 35-yard interception return after a Samuel Sandvig score in the third quarter, held the Warriors to 117 total yards.
