NEW DELHI: India recorded an unfortunate performance on Friday after being bowled out for just 156 in the first innings of the second Test against New Zealand MCA Stadium in Pune. The collapse gave New Zealand a commanding 103-run lead after the visitors had scored 259 runs on the first day.
This is the second consecutive home Test in which India have conceded a lead of over 100 runs in a row, an incident not seen in 23 years.
Scorecard: India vs New Zealand, 2nd Test
In the last Test in Bengaluru, India suffered a shocking collapse as they were bowled out for a meager 46 points, their lowest home score, handing a massive lead of 356 runs to the visitors. This resulted in India losing the game by 8 wickets.
The last time India gave away more than 100 leads in consecutive home Tests was against Australia in 2001, where they conceded 173 runs at Wankhede and 274 at Eden Gardens.

Despite this undesirable record, India famously won the series against Australia and will be hoping for a similar revival in this series against New Zealand.
The second Test started positively for India with Washington Sundar scoring a career-best performance of 7/59 to defeat New Zealand by 259. However, India's batting faltered on the first day with the captaincy

Rohit Sharma fell for a duck, leaving the hosts 16/1 overnight.

On the second day, India's top players Shubman Gill (30) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (30) seemed steady and took the score to 50/1 before Gill was caught LBW by Mitchell Santner. From then on, India collapsed, losing nine wickets for 106 runs in just over 24 overs. Santner led the attack for New Zealand with a career-high 7 for 53 and Ravindra Jadeja's late attempt of 38 off 46 balls was the only significant resistance.
With New Zealand securing a sizeable lead in the first innings, India now faces the difficult task of remaining competitive in the game and the series.
