Will Young and Daryl Mitchell scored fighting half-centuries in grueling conditions as New Zealand reached 192-6 at tea on the opening day of the third and final Test against India in Mumbai on Friday.

Mitchell was unbeaten on 53 while Ish Sodhi was one shot away as the Black Caps endured sweltering heat and humidity at the Wankhede Stadium and laid a solid foundation for their 3-0 series victory.

Young capped his half-century by dismissing Washington Sundar just after lunch and looked to be on his way to his first goal, but failed to score 71 against the run of play, relegating Ravindra Jadeja to first slip .

After breaking the 87-run partnership for the fourth wicket, Jadeja claimed another victim in the same over, bowling Tom Blundell for a three-ball duck, but Mitchell steadied the ship with a gutsy fifty despite being under suffered from cramps.

Glenn Phillips was on 17 just before tea when Jadeja dismissed him with a straighter delivery.

Tom Latham won the toss and didn't hesitate to opt for the shot, but it was India who tasted early success when paceman Akash deep stopped Devon Conway lbw for four within the first half hour when there was plenty of variable bounce.

India wasted little time with spin to take advantage of the difficult conditions, but New Zealand rose to the challenge with Young Ravichandran Ashwin lofting a big six over long on in the 15th over.

Washington then struck from the other side, bowling out Latham for a fine 28 and Rachin Ravindra for a five with almost identical shots that straightened out a bit before going past the bat.

New Zealand won the opening match in Bengaluru by eight wickets for their first Test victory in India in 36 years and completed the series in Pune with a 113-run victory.

It was New Zealand's first series win in India since 1955 and the Black Caps ended the hosts' home run of 18 consecutive series wins since a 2-1 loss to England in 2012.

The last time India were blanked in a home series was in 2000 when they lost 2-0 to South Africa and ahead of the five-match tour of Australia, India will be hoping for a morale-boosting victory.
