Andrew Garfield remembers the generosity of his late co-star Heath Ledger.

During Garfield's recent appearance in the Happy, sad, confused Promote podcast We live in timeThe actor recalled that Ledger, who died in 2008 at the age of 28, once gave him a pair of sunglasses when they first met.

“I still have a lot of mementos of him,” said Garfield, 41. “I remember the first day I met him, he had these great Ray-Ban sunglasses on and I said, 'Hey, cool sunglasses,' and he was like, 'Oh yeah?' And the next day they were in my dressing room. He just left them for me.

“He was just a very generous, beautiful creative spirit,” he added.

Garfield and Ledger worked together on the 2009 film The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassuswhich ultimately marked Ledger's final on-screen appearance after his death from an accidental overdose. When Garfield met Ledger, he was filming his famous role as Joker in Christopher Nolan's 2008 film The Dark Knight.

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus follows a man who achieves immortality by making a deal with the devil. He traveled with a theater group for thousands of years in his life. Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell came to complete the film as variations on Ledger's character after Ledger died midway through production.

“(Ledger) was so free and so wild and kind of dangerous on set, in a way that was inspiring and spontaneous,” Garfield recalled, admitting that he himself “really cared about getting it right or “Well, whatever that means,” at this point in his career.

“He said before every take, or maybe before every take in every scene, 'Let's have some fun with this,'” Garfield added. “And I thought, 'Oh yeah, let's have some fun with this, let's have some fun instead of trying to get it right.' “
