How to get around on Sunday

Getting around the city is no easy task during the Twin Cities Marathon, with roads closed in both Minneapolis and St. Paul during Sunday's big race.

With thousands of runners heading from downtown Minneapolis to the State Capitol, the easiest way for drivers to avoid the race course is to use Interstates 94 and 35W. Public transport users can choose the blue or green line as several bus routes will be affected on Sunday morning and into the afternoon.

Of course, drivers in inner-city areas have to use the motorway to use it. The best north-south route to traverse the course is Hiawatha Avenue in Minneapolis and Grand Avenue or Ayd Mill Road in St. Paul. Motorists needing an east-west crossing can use the Lake Street/Marshall Avenue bridge and the Ford Parkway bridge over 46th Street, which connects south Minneapolis and St. Paul.

The streets around the state Capitol will be closed Thursday and will not reopen until after the race. Summit Avenue east of Snelling Avenue in St. Paul will be closed Saturday for some of the weekend festivities.

In Minneapolis, downtown streets will be closed early Sunday. During the 10-mile and 26.2-mile races, several park paths will be closed to vehicles on Sunday morning. Roads along the circuit will gradually reopen as competitors move from west to east.

Several subway lines will be rerouted from 6 a.m. to mid-afternoon on Sunday. These include the express bus routes A-Line, C-Line and D-Line. Other local routes that pass through south Minneapolis and parts of St. Paul will also be rerouted. Find Metro Transit alerts here.
