How much rain did Iowa get? Here are Wednesday's rainfall totals

Much of Iowa finally saw significant rainfall Wednesday, but it came at the expense of Beggars' Night for the Des Moines metro, which saw more than an inch of rain.

The threat of heavy rain and severe storms prompted metropolitan cities to announce Tuesday that Beggar's Night would be moved from Wednesday to Thursday – bringing trick-or-treating to Halloween night for the first time in decades.

How much rain did Des Moines get?

A total of 1.81 inches of rain fell in Des Moines from 7 a.m. Wednesday to 7 a.m. Thursday. The rainfall was accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds, which briefly triggered a severe thunderstorm warning.

The rain showers began in the early afternoon and continued into the evening during trick-or-treating time.

Ankeny reported 1.52 inches of rain.

What was the highest rainfall total in all of Iowa?

Here are the highest rainfall totals reported across Iowa from Wednesday through Thursday morning.

  • Osceola: 2.72 inches
  • Dubuque: 2.62 inches
  • Pella: 2.41 inches

How much rain did Ames get?

Ames had slightly more rain than Des Moines but was not included in any of the severe weather warnings Wednesday evening. A total of 1.91 inches was reported.

How much rain did Iowa City get?

Iowa City was on the southern edge of the system and missed most of the rain. Only 0.19 inches of rain was reported.

Cedar Rapids to the north reported 2.05 inches of rain.

Will there be more rain on Halloween night?

There is unlikely to be any rain on Thursday due to the postponed Trick-or-Treating Festival, but it will be cool.

The maximum temperature is 50 degrees, the minimum temperature is 34 degrees. The morning will start out cloudy but will gradually clear as the day progresses, with gusts up to 20 mph throughout the day. Winds should calm to 6 mph by evening, according to the National Weather Service.

The temperature when most trick-or-treating begins at 6 p.m. is expected to be 48 degrees, with a wind chill of 44 degrees. By 8 p.m. temperatures will gradually drop to 45 degrees
