The Detroit Pistons and their fans have some tepid reasons for “hopium” — that is, hope and optimism — as the 2024-25 NBA season approaches.

They reshuffled decision-makers in the front office by hiring Trajan Langdon as president and on the floor by hiring JB Bickerstaff, fired by the Cleveland Cavaliers, as head coach.

Langdon brought in four veterans, the most notable being longtime NBA forward Tobias Harris, to surround a core of former lottery picks led by Cade Cunningham, Jaden Ivey, Jalen Duren and Ausar Thompson.

How many games should the Pistons win this year?

NBA Opening Night Tuesday odds provided by BetMGM:

  • Overall win over/under: 25½
  • Line: -125 over, +105 under.

The Pistons' win total is at 25½ at BetMGM, with a slight advantage over the over at -125, while the under is +105. This means that to win $100, you would have to bet $125 on the Pistons to win at least 26 games. If you bet on the Under (25 wins or less) at $100, you would win $105 if you hit.

Surprisingly, three NBA teams have a lower O/U win total than the Pistons at BetMGM: the Portland Trail Blazers (21½), the Washington Wizards (20½) and the Brooklyn Nets (19½).

The defending champion Boston Celtics (58½) and Oklahoma City Thunder (57½) have the two highest win totals.

The Pistons have a tough time opening the season, starting with six games against Eastern Conference playoff teams from last season: They're 4½-point underdogs against the Indiana Pacers on Wednesday, then visit Cleveland on Friday, host on Saturday Boston and visit Miami on Monday and Philadelphia two days later, then host the New York Knicks. Her first reprieve comes November 3rd in Brooklyn.

What are the Pistons' chances of making the playoffs?

  • The Pistons are +1400 to make the playoffs and -5000 to miss them. You would have to bet $50 to win $1 for the Pistons to miss the postseason. If you bet $1 on them making the playoffs and they do, you would make $14.
  • The Pistons are +500 at BetMGM to enter the 10-team play-in tournament in the East, pitting the No. 10 seed at No. 9 and the No. 8 seed at No. 7. Teams seeded Nos. 9-10 must win twice to reach the playoffs and play a second elimination game against the 7-8 loser No. 8 seed.
