Here are the races to watch

The party that will control the US House of Representatives – one of the two chambers of the US Congress – remains uncertain.

The House currently has a Republican majority, which Democrats hope to reverse with several key elections.

Every seat in the House of Representatives is up for grabs this election cycle. It is important to note that the final tally may not be known for a few days.

Republicans won several races on Tuesday, gaining control of the upper chamber, the Senate.

Here are some of the races that could decide control of the U.S. House of Representatives:

Sarah McBride made history by becoming the first transgender member of the U.S. House of Representatives in her Delaware district on Tuesday evening.

McBride, who already made history as the first openly transgender person ever elected to a Senate seat, was running against Republican John Whalen, a former Delaware state police officer.

She defeated Whalen by 15 points in the Delaware congressional district, which includes all of Delaware.

“Delaware has sent the message loud and clear that we must be a country that protects reproductive freedom, that guarantees paid leave and affordable child care for all of our families, that ensures that housing and health care are available to all, and that is a democracy. “That’s big enough for all of us,” she wrote on X after the victory.

In Virginia's 2nd District, which includes Virginia Beach, Democrat Missy Cotter Smassal challenged incumbent Rep. Jen Kiggans, a Republican.

Votes are still being counted in the race between the two Navy veterans, but Kiggans led by four points early Wednesday morning. It is one of the most competitive races in the state.

In Virginia, two candidates are also looking to fill Democrat Abigail Spanberger's seat after she decided not to run for re-election and instead run for governor.

Republican candidate Derrick Anderson and Democrat Eugene Vindman are vying to represent Virginia's 7th District, which includes Fredericksburg and Culpeper in the northern part of the state.

The district went from red to blue by a narrow margin in 2018 when Spanberger won for the first time.

The race had not yet been called as of early Wednesday morning.

In Pennsylvania's 10th congressional district in the south of the state, there is a duel between six-term incumbent Scott Perry and Democratic challenger Janelle Stelson.

Perry, former chairman of the ultra-conservative House Freedom Caucus, has yet to face a strong challenger. He helped lead the Trump campaign's efforts to overturn the 2020 election results.

Stelson is a former television news anchor and former Republican who registered as a Democrat last year.

As of Wednesday morning, Perry was leading by less than a point, the BBC's US news partner CBS reported. But the race has not yet been officially called.

In Pennsylvania's 8th District, Republicans flipped a seat in the district that includes President Joe Biden's hometown of Scranton.

Business owner Robert Bresnahan defeated incumbent Democratic Rep. Matt Cartwright by two points. Cartwright has served six terms.

Republicans flipped four seats in the 2022 midterm elections, paving the way to capturing the House of Representatives.

Now the Democrats want to win them back.

There are several important House races to watch in New York.

In the 17th Congressional District, former Democratic Congressman Mondaire Jones is challenging freshman Republican Rep. Mike Lawler.

Democrats lost the district, considered one of the most competitive swing districts in the U.S., in 2022. As of Wednesday morning, it had not yet been officially named.

Also in New York, freshman Republican Marc Molinaro is running for re-election in a race against Democrat Josh Riley, a former county executive.

The rematch race between the two candidates in New York's 19th Congressional District is considered one of the most expensive House races in the country. Molinaro won in 2022 by just 4,500 votes.

The race had not yet been decided as of Wednesday morning, but with 94 percent of the votes counted, the two candidates were neck and neck.
