Europe must rethink its support for Ukraine if Donald Trump is elected, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said on Sunday, as the continent “cannot bear the burdens of war alone.”

Orban opposes military aid to Ukraine and has made it clear that he believes Trump shares his views and would negotiate a peace settlement for Ukraine.

The Trump ally said: “We (in Europe) have to be clear that if there is going to be a pro-peace president in America, which I not only believe in but also interpret the numbers that way… if that “If America is committed to peace, Europe cannot continue to be in favor of war,” Orban said.

“Europe cannot bear the burden (of war) alone, and as Americans move toward peace, we must also adapt,” Orban said.

Europe is concerned about how the outcome of the US elections will affect the war in Ukraine and the security of the continent.

Donald Trump's campaign has triumphed in a surprise poll that showed Kamala Harris ahead by three points in Iowa, a state previously considered a safe state for Republicans.

The Trump campaign released a memo from its chief pollster and chief data adviser calling the Des Moines Register poll “a clear outlier” and saying that an Emerson College poll – also released Saturday – reflects the state of the electorate better reflected in Iowa.

The Emerson College Polling/RealClearDefense poll of a similar number of likely voters on November 1 and 2 came to a completely different conclusion: Trump led Harris by 10 points. This survey also has a margin of error of 3.4 percentage points.

According to the Emerson College poll, Trump is well ahead of Harris among men and independents, while Harris is doing well among those under 30.

Donald Trump and his many surrogates on the campaign trail are pursuing a strategy of publicly raising expectations among their supporters, which could lead to resentment if Kamala Harris wins, especially if her victory is narrow or is thrown into disarray by a late decision wave democratic elections.

“If we could bring God down from heaven and he was the vote counter, we would win this, we would win California, we would win a lot of states,” Trump said last week in typical bombast about his prospects.

But inside sources tell the Guardian they are generally nervous about the crucial swing state of Pennsylvania, through which most of Trump's path to 270 electoral college votes runs. Internal polls show Trump ahead, but some of those numbers have been so rosy in recent weeks that advisers have become suspicious of their accuracy.

Good morning and welcome to our coverage of the 2024 U.S. presidential election as we approach the final hours before polls open on Tuesday.

It's set to be a busy day for Donald Trump, appearing in three swing states, and it comes amid a surprise setback in Iowa, where a poll showed him trailing Kamala Harris, previously considered a safe state for Republicans.

The Republican candidate will begin this morning with a rally in Lititz, Pennsylvania, followed by an afternoon event in Kinston, North Carolina, and round out the day in Macon, Georgia.

Harris, meanwhile, will travel to Michigan later today, where the Democratic candidate will speak at a campaign rally at Michigan State University in East Lansing.

Last night, she stepped out of the campaign trail with a surprise appearance on Saturday Night Live, living up to her reputation as a “joyful warrior.” Harris portrayed herself appearing in the mirror opposite actress Maya Rudolph, who first played her on the series in 2019 and has reprized the role this season.
