Elon Musk brags about Trump's victory before the election

Topline

Tech billionaires and Donald Trump supporters Elon Musk and Palmer Luckey rejoiced on social media on Tuesday evening that Trump took the lead in almost all swing states – even though the election for the former president has not yet been called.

Important facts

Musk tweeted “Game, set and win” on Tuesday evening and later posted a photo of himself speaking to Trump at an election night party.

The billionaire also wrote, “America is a nation of builders” and “Soon you will be free to build.”

Luckey, the founder of Oculus VR, said “GG,” an acronym for good game, in a similar post, to which Musk replied “yes.”

Trump won North Carolina's 16 electoral votes not long after the billionaires' boasts, the Associated Press predicted, even though a group of critical swing states have not yet been called.

Complete counts of all swing states that potentially decide the presidential election could take hours or days, with states like Arizona, Nevada and Pennsylvania (which together account for 36 electoral votes) expected to take the longest.

Important background

Trump's victory in North Carolina brought his electoral vote total to 230, compared to Vice President Kamala Harris' 205, giving him a significant lead. The former president will now look to results in other swing states such as Arizona, Nevada and Georgia – and northern battlegrounds Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania – to pave the way to victory. Trump is ahead in most of these states, although some states have large numbers of outstanding ballots. The betting providers on Polymarket expect a probability of more than 95% for a Trump victory.
