RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Democratic North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein has won the state's race for governor, according to an Associated Press election call.

Stein defeated Republican Lieutenant Governor Mark Robinson, whose campaign collapsed after CNN reported that he had posted pro-slavery and pro-Nazi comments on a pornographic website. Robinson, who was endorsed by former President Trump, denied writing the posts, saying they were fake, and is suing CNN for defamation.

Stein will succeed two-term Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper, who was term-limited for running again, in January. He has been the state's attorney general since 2017 and previously served in the state Senate. Stein, 58, grew up in Chapel Hill, where his father co-founded the state's first integrated law firm. He will be the first Jewish governor of North Carolina.
