Election 2024: Traffic problems in Philly this weekend before concert, campaign rally on Monday

Motorists in Philadelphia should be aware of road closures this weekend and on Election Day as streets around the art museum will be closed for a campaign rally.

It's a view you see a lot in Philly. The famous Philadelphia Museum of Art looms in the background as work crews scramble to set up light stands and a stage for another big event. This time it's a rally and concert on Benjamin Franklin Parkway for the Harris campaign on Monday evening. And with that comes traffic. FOX 29's Jeff Cole asked a motorist if it was too much. He said, “Yes, it really is. It's really too much. I can’t really explain it, but, man!”

Drivers honk their horns along the parkway near Eakens Oval on Friday afternoon. Traffic is restricted as the oval is closed for construction work on the stage and will remain so until 8pm on Tuesday evening.

Sections of Kelly Drive, Spring Garden Street and the Parkway will also be closed Saturday morning. A real challenge for those who drive for a living. The driver told Cole it was a nuisance, but when big events came up, business would pick up.

The Oval is home to the Philadelphia Thanksgiving Day Parade with its Fourth of July concert and fireworks display, which draws crowds, commerce and excitement, as well as traffic problems.

On Monday, nearly all roads leading to Eakins Oval will be closed at 5 a.m. and will remain that way until Election Day. The price Philly pays for being the home of “Brotherly Love” and big events. One driver, stuck behind the wheel of a red pickup truck, said: “It's annoying, but you have to be patient. You have to be patient with everything during this special time.” Motorists in Philadelphia will want to watch for road closures this weekend and in the coming weeks.
