On Wednesday, Atletico Madrid experienced one of its most difficult Champions League evenings in recent years. Diego Simeone's side suffered a convincing 4-0 defeat to Benfica at the Estadio da Luz – a result and performance that will leave the Colchoneros incredibly disappointed.

In his post-match press conference, Atleti head coach Diego Simeone took the blame for the crushing defeat.

“The responsibility is on me to try to create what I wanted, but it didn’t show. The penalty came very quickly, we were 2-0 behind and couldn't get what we would have liked.”

Simeone also tried to remain optimistic despite a devastating evening for him and his Atletico Madrid players.

“I always think positively and always see this as a good opportunity to continue improving. We did a very good job. We had a game that didn't live up to our expectations, but it's part of the game. Congratulations to the opponent, a very good game. They took advantage of every mistake we made and were incredibly decisive and deserved to win. Without a doubt.”
