Delhi's annual 'gas chamber' season is back: smog videos and dark jokes galore | On trend

When the Delhi-National Capital Region woke up, the region was covered in thick smog. As the AQI crosses the 300 mark and enters the 'very poor' category, it is the time of the year when people suffer from various health problems due to heavy air pollution. Expectedly, this Delhi-NCR specific 'season' creates a buzz on social media every year, including from people spreading dark humor. This year is no different, with people expressing their frustrations and concerns with a touch of humor.

“Annual Ritual”

One business owner shared a picture of a street shrouded in smog and wrote: “This time of year. When the sky over Delhi/NCR turns smog gray. And WA groups are having heated debates about what is causing this. Both are annual rituals in our annual calendar.”

“Delhi is suffocating”

Several people have expressed their frustration and pointed out the serious health issues this season brings. The situation in the capital has been described as a “gas chamber” and there are fears that Delhi could suffocate due to the smoky fog.

“Health problems”

One person wrote: “These smoggy mornings and my throat don't like each other. Delhi and the people of Delhi suffer from this smog every year during the Christmas season.”

“A game?”

“Let’s play a sobering game: I have never breathed fresh air in Delhi NCR. As #AQI rises above 300, it's not just smog that we're suffocating – it's neglect,” one person wrote.

A worrying picture

PTI has posted a video capturing the increasing level of pollution in Delhi-NCR. “A thick layer of smog envelopes parts of Delhi as the AQI level drops. Pictures from Akshardham area,” reads the caption of the post.

Government response

“The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has set four levels to control air pollution. Currently, the air quality index (AQI) is above 300, which has led to the implementation of GRAP Stage II,” Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai said.

He added that water spraying would increase across Delhi and authorities would continue to inspect construction sites.
