WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – This month is “Sober October” for thousands of Americans who have chosen to take a break from alcohol to focus on their health and making safer choices.

New research shows what could affect your insurance rates if you choose to drink and drive.

The Current data from Market Watch Show how much Kansas drivers have to pay for insurance if they get drunk. If you have comprehensive insurance, you could see a 62 percent increase in your rates after a DUI, from $202 per month to $327.

The effects of driving under the influence are even more serious for Kansas drivers with minimum liability insurance. Their rates increase on average by 80 percent, from $57 per month to $102.

David Straughn, a member of the Market Watch Guides research team, said there are more costs to consider than just insurance when it comes to drunk driving.

“The raw costs have to be taken into account. On top of that, you have fewer options,” Straughn said. “Not everyone will insure someone who has a DUI. This doesn't even take into account things like the cost of a lawyer or paying fines. If you have an accident, you will have to deal with the associated costs. A DUI can affect your job prospects.”

Given these consequences, it is important to schedule a designated driver or rideshare service any time you plan to drink alcohol. Make this plan before you start drinking while you are in the best shape possible and stick to it.”
