Criterium racer Michael Hernandez was the first Orlando police officer to catch a suspected shooter Thursday night

Several Orlando Police Department officers responded to a suspect in downtown Orlando on Thursday evening after shots were fired into large crowds at two locations, leaving two people dead and six others injured. One of those officers, considered a “hero” for quickly responding and stopping the rampage, was Michael Hernandez, known for his other work as a criterium specialist and captain of the REIGN Storm Racing team.

A 17-year-old suspect identified by Orlando police, Jaylen Dwayne Edgar, was taken into custody and charged with two counts of first-degree murder with a firearm and six counts of attempted first-degree murder with a firearm, Orlando police announced announced a press conference on Friday.
