Coach Smith, Michigan State, frustrated after narrow loss

2 minutes, 4 seconds Read

Michigan State coach Jonathan Smith got his first taste of the Spartans' rivalry with the Michigan Wolverines. There is no doubt that Michigan has a much more talented roster than Michigan State. Still, Michigan and a Michigan State team that refused went down without a fight.

However, a closely contested rivalry game can sometimes negate a roster difference or an opposing team's home field advantage. That happened on Saturday when the Spartans and Wolverines squared off in Ann Arbor.

Smith was in no mood to hear about moral victories or that the team was close to beating Michigan in his first season as Michigan State coach. Smith wasn't a fan of how the Spartans missed multiple opportunities to tie the game or take the lead.

He found that missed opportunities were one of the things that frustrated him.

“Frustrating. Disappointing. There’s a lot to digest in the game,” Smith said. “I look at both ends of the halves, we didn’t do well at all. At the end of the first half, give them the two-minute drive, we give them the ball, then they get three points there, so that's the end. “It wasn't good going into halftime. I thought the position on the field wasn't good, but our guys kept fighting.

“Fast forward to the fourth quarter, we get it within one score, we have the ball, drive all the way down, fourth and fifth, we don’t finish the thing. We still have three timeouts and we can do it. “We didn't get them off the field and so we didn't finish the way we wanted to. There were really some things we didn't do well enough to get a win tonight that was disappointing.”

As frustrating as Saturday's loss may have been, the season is far from over Blacksmith and the Spartans. They still have two difficult games ahead of them, but after that they have two very winnable games. The best part is that three of Michigan State's next four games will be at home.

While none of the remaining games are easy, it's still safe to assume Smith will pick up two more wins and reach a bowl game in his first season.
