LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – Due to the rain and storm chances for Halloween, cities and towns across the region are making decisions about whether to postpone trick-or-treating until Thursday or change the day.

In Jefferson County, Indiana, officials decided to move trick-or-treating to Wednesday evening. Meanwhile, children in Floyd County can collect candy in their Halloween costumes on Friday, November 1st from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m

For the people of Louisville, there will still be trick-or-treating on Thursday, regardless of the weather. Neighbors on Hillcrest Avenue, a popular Halloween spot, said they don't think rain will keep people away.

“The sidewalks will be lined with people from below, above and below,” said Jeremy Crow, a Hillcrest resident since 2021. “No matter whether the weather is good or bad, it’s going to be crazy.”

Many people who live in the neighborhood start putting up their decorations about a month before Halloween. They said participation was not mandatory, but for many of them it had become a tradition.

Susan Longerbeam also lives on Hillcrest Avenue. She said she typically gives away about 3,000 pieces of candy on Halloween.

“I hope most of the rain doesn't fall between 5 p.m. and 9 a.m. when we hand out candy,” Longerbeam added. “But we've had a lot of colder weather, that hasn't slowed people down, so I don't think that will be the case.”

Deborah Jones visits Longerbeam from Oregon to spend Halloween in Louisville. She said she wouldn't let the rain ruin her plans for the night.

“I brought a costume,” she admitted. “I will be Elphaba. I'm going to wear green makeup and if it's raining and running, I don't care because I'm going to be out there giving the kids candy.”
