Chris Paul discusses construction chemistry with Victor Wembanyama

The new-look San Antonio Spurs with Chris Paul have shown upward momentum in the early stages of the 2024-25 season. But the Paul-Victor Wembanyama one-two punch is still coming together as the pairing becomes increasingly comfortable playing together.

The Spurs enter Wednesday's game against the undefeated Oklahoma City Thunder at 1-2, and the 2024 NBA Rookie of the Year has largely picked up right where he left off. With the exception of his three-point shooting (22.2 percent in three games), Wembanyama has filled the stat sheet.

Paul, who signed a one-year deal to work alongside Wembanyama and head coach Gregg Popovich, spoke about building chemistry with the 20-year-old and admitted that he is “still learning” and going through the initial adjustments, via Paul Garcia of The Spot -Up recording:

“I'm still figuring this out. We’re still learning how to play off each other,” Paul said of Wembanyama. “He’s different than anyone I’ve ever played with, so it’s not as easy as doing this or doing that.”

“I've never seen a guy that size take dribble steps backwards, and I've never set up ball screens for a 7-foot guy. So I’m still learning as well.”

That's a fair assessment from Paul, who averaged 7.3 points and 6.7 assists over 28 minutes in the first three games. In Paul's defence, Wembanyama has probably never played with a player capable of making passes and playing the way Paul does, even as he approaches 40.

The Paul Wemby duo will be exciting to watch for the rest of the season and it will be interesting to see if Spurs can push into the playoffs.
