Former President Trump joked about Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell's (R-Ky.) endorsement, noting that it “must have been a painful day in his life” since the two have been at odds for years.

Trump spoke at a rally in North Carolina on Sunday and mentioned McConnell after remarks about inflation under the administration of President Biden and Vice President Harris.

“They caused inflation. They screwed up my energy policy, prices rose sharply and everything else is quite simple. Furthermore, they spent way too much. They got trillions and millions of dollars,” Trump said, as Mediaite pointed out.

“Hopefully we get rid of Mitch McConnell soon because he helped this guy. Can you believe he supported me? Boy, that must have been a painful day in his life,” he continued.

McConnell endorsed Trump in March, but their relationship remains icy.

The minority leader is reportedly not talking to Trump, even though most of the Senate GOP conference has warmed to the idea of supporting his presidential campaign.

According to a new biography of the senator, McConnell privately called Trump a “stupid,” “ill-tempered” and “despicable human being” after the 2020 election.

McConnell made the comments before the attack on the Capitol on January 6, 2021, and the two publicly parted ways when the senator recognized Biden as the official election winner and later portrayed him as a good guy.

When asked about his past comments, McConnell said last month that his comments pale in comparison to what other Trump allies have said about the former president and that it doesn't matter because “we're all on the same team now.” “

Still, it appears Trump is holding a grudge. At his rally on Sunday, he criticized McConnell, saying the Kentucky Republican “doesn't have to support him.”

“What a shame,” he said.
