Bob Costas is saying goodbye to baseball, the sport for which he is perhaps best known, and retiring as MLB play-by-play announcer.

Costas, 72, confirmed his retirement to The Athletic on Thursday but said he would announce his decision at a later date.

Nearing the end of his storied sportswriting career, Costas served as the lead play-by-play man for MLB Network games since the network's inception in 2009. He has also worked on playoff games for Turner, and his most recent assignment was the York Yankees' victory over the Kansas City Royals in the American League Division Series on TBS.

According to The Athletic, Costas decided before this season that he would retire after 2024, coinciding with the end of his contract.

Costas received the National Baseball Hall of Fame's 2018 Ford C. Frick Award for broadcast excellence. He played baseball for NBC from 1982 to 1989 and 1994 to 2000, including broadcasts of the 1995, 1997 and 1999 World Series.

Over the past five decades, he has served as a play-by-play announcer and studio host for several other sports, most notably as primetime host of the Olympics on NBC from 1992 to 2016.
