Apple TV+'s 'Sunny' Starring Rashida Jones Canceled After One Season (Exclusive) | News

Sunnythe Apple TV+ mystery thriller starring Rashida Jones was canceled after one season, Screen has learned.

Sources close to the production confirmed that the A24-produced series will not be returning after the 10-part series that began in July and ended with a cliffhanger on September 4th. Screen has reached out to Apple TV+ and A24 for comment.

In the story, Jones played Suzie Sakamoto, an American living in futuristic Kyoto, Japan, whose life is turned upside down when her husband and son disappear in a mysterious plane crash. As a “consolation,” she gives Sunny a robot from a new class of household robots manufactured by her husband's electronics company. They develop an unexpected friendship and discover the dark truth about what really happened to their family.

The series was created by Katie Robbins The affair And The last tycoonwho also served as showrunner, and executive producer Lucy Tcherniak. Jones also executive produced the series and led a cast that included Hidetoshi Nishijima, Joanna Sotomura and Judy Ongg.

Robbins was also a writer and executive producer for her studio Babka Pictures. The story is based on the novel The Dark Handbook by the Irish writer Colin O'Sullivan, who lives in Japan.

The US series was notable for being filmed entirely in Japan. Production began in the summer of 2022, before Japan fully reopened its borders to tourists, and ran through the rest of the year.

It is the second major US series filmed in Japan to be canceled in recent months. Max announced the launch of a crime series in June Tokyo Vice would not be returning for a third season, although the showrunners are keen for the drama to continue through international partners who have picked up the drama to air.
