After two decades of Goodman leadership, who will be the next mayor of Las Vegas?

LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — For the first time in 25 years, the city of Las Vegas will have a mayor not named Goodman.

Oscar and Carolyn Goodman have been at the center of Las Vegas politics since Oscar took office in 1999. After Carolyn Goodman was fired, the office will soon have a new resident.

With polls closed across the state, preliminary results are in from the Nevada Secretary of State's office for the mayoral race. That puts former Congresswoman Shelley Berkley in the lead.

Who are the candidates in this race?

Former Congresswoman Shelley Berkley and current Ward 2 Councilwoman Victoria Seaman have been named finalists for mayor of Las Vegas as the top two vote-getters in the primary.

Shelley Berkley represented Nevada's 1st congressional district as a Democrat from 1999 to 2013. In January last year, she announced her mayoral candidacy in an exclusive interview with Channel 13 host Tricia Kean. Berkley promised to make affordable housing, homelessness and the local small business economy the main focuses of her campaign.

Victoria Seaman announced her candidacy for mayor in February last year. She has been a member of the Las Vegas City Council since 2016, representing District 2. She previously served as a Republican in the Nevada Assembly (from 2014 to 2016). Seaman has been a vocal opponent of the city's spending on the litigation over the defunct Badlands golf course — the subject of extensive reporting by 13 Investigates — and a proponent of changes at the Animal Foundation, the taxpayer-funded local animal shelter that is also at the center of attention multiple Channel 13 investigations.

Berkley and Seaman agreed to a debate in October moderated by Channel 13 senior political reporter Steve Sebelius.
