According to Tracker Models, Hurricane Rafael's direction has changed significantly

The planned path for Hurricane Rafaelwhich was a Category 2 hurricane over Cuba on Wednesday has changed dramatically. Since the storm was predicted on Monday to make landfall in the United States near Louisiana, models for November 6 predict that the storm will have a wide range over the next seven days. Various weather experts and trackers disagree on where it is headed, other than that it is heading toward the middle of the Gulf of Mexico. Here's what we know so far about Hurricane Rafael's path for the rest of the week.

Which path will Hurricane Rafael take?

While most trackers still expect Hurricane Rafael to move past Florida toward Louisiana, many models in the Caribbean predict it will move further west toward Mexico and Texas.

Compared to models earlier in the week, Hurricane Rafael was trending westward, although the direction of its trajectory varied greatly. As the National Center of Atmospheric Research (NCAR) tracker above shows, possible paths extend as far south as the Bay of Campeche and as far east as Florida.

The good news is that the hurricane's strength is still expected to weaken to a tropical storm or tropical depression when it eventually reaches Mexico or the United States.

One of the most persistent models comes from a Wednesday report from Accuweather, which expects the storm to move west before eventually turning north and reaching central Louisiana at 7 p.m. ET on Monday.

Meanwhile, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) changed its model, saying in a report Wednesday at 10 a.m. ET that it will still be in the Gulf on Monday. The storm is forecast to head toward the Mexico-Texas coastal border a few days later and dissipate more harmlessly in the Gulf before reaching land.
