Four things Donald Trump could do if he had full control of Congress

2 minutes, 4 seconds Read

Donald Trump claimed in his victory speech that he had an “unprecedented and powerful mandate” to govern.

If Republicans control the entire Congress, that's exactly what he'll have.

Republicans have already flipped several Democratic seats to take control of the Senate. The party is the clear favorite to remain in the House of Representatives.

A Republican trifecta of the House, Senate and White House would give the 78-year-old unfettered power to push through his agenda for the next two years.

Because the Supreme Court also has a six-three majority of conservatives — including three nominated by Trump himself — any potential protections are invalidated.

Tax cuts and tariffs

A GOP Congress could quickly pass a major budget that would deliver on Trump's promise to cut taxes by trillions of dollars.

A key priority will be extending Trump's 2017 tax cuts – his key legislative achievement in his first term, which is set to expire at the end of next year.

Republicans could go further by pushing to eliminate the estate tax on inheritances from relatives and further reduce the tax burden on working people.

Trump also plans, with support from Congress, to drastically tighten the protectionist trade policies of his first term in office.

He threatened a tariff of more than 10 percent on all foreign imports and possibly even a 100 percent tariff on some Chinese-made products.

“Retribution” against opponents

Trump has made it clear that he will use the Justice Department to pursue both his personal and political goals.

He has indicated he would seek “retaliation” against his opponents, and one of the few limitations on his ability to pressure the Justice Department has been the threat of impeachment.

Since impeachment is a process that begins in the House of Representatives, this threat disappears if it is controlled by Republicans.

Help for Ukraine

U.S. funding for Ukraine will almost certainly end in a Republican-controlled House of Representatives.

The Republican hardliners in the chamber were among the most vocal opponents of extensive financing packages for Kiev.

While Trump has indicated that he will be able to negotiate a quick peace deal with Moscow, it is unlikely that Republicans will continue to support US dollars to defend Ukraine regardless of the outcome.

Immigration reform

With full control of Congress, Republicans can advance plans to fund tough, ambitious immigration policies, including completing Trump's signature border wall.

They will also be able to pass legislation to fund Trump's plan to implement the largest deportation program in US history.
