A man in Jackson, Mississippi, died Monday after hot asphalt was poured on him while he was repairing a dump truck.

The 41-year-old man was working on a hydraulic line under the truck in Mississippi's capital city when the tailgate opened and asphalt fell on him, Jackson police said in a post on Facebook on Monday.

Jackson Police Chief Joseph Wade told reporters at the scene that authorities were notified of the incident around 10:30 a.m. Monday.

When they arrived on scene, they found the victim, a private contractor, “buried under hot asphalt.”

“It appeared to be a malfunction of his dump truck,” Wade said. “The vehicle he was here in to pick up asphalt while trying to fix the mitigation issue actually dumped all of the hot asphalt on him.”

Wade said several people at the scene attempted to help the victim as “he was trying to survive the injuries, but the injuries were just too great for him to survive.”

“Terrible situation”

Wade described the incident as a “terrible situation,” offered his “prayers (and) condolences,” and added that his heart “goes out to his family.”

“I spoke to some of his family members here on site. They said he was a good man, a hard-working man just trying to make a living,” Wade said. “They were injured. They were traumatized.”

Wade said police were conducting a death investigation, “but it appears to be an accidental death at this point,” adding that police are still examining the details to determine exactly what went wrong.
