Former President Donald Trump was elected to a second term on Wednesday, defeating Vice President Kamala Harris — and many are wondering whether the president-elect can run for a third term in 2028.

Although two states remain to be called, Trump has 295 electoral votes while Harris has 226.

The inauguration is scheduled for Monday, January 20, 2025, at the U.S. Capitol Building in Washington, DC

When does Donald Trump's second term end?

The next presidential election is scheduled for Tuesday, November 7, 2028. The next president will be sworn in on Saturday, January 20, 2029.

What does the Constitution say about presidential term limits?

The 22nd Amendment, ratified in February 1951, stipulates that a president can only hold office twice. Here is part of it:

“No person may be elected to the office of President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President for more than two years or served as President during a term for which another person has been elected may become President .” elected to the office of president more than once.”

Has a sitting president ever served more than two terms?

Yes. Franklin D. Roosevelt, the 32nd President, served from 1933 to 1945. Roosevelt won four terms and was the longest serving president in U.S. history.
