BRUNSWICK (WGME) – Maine's incumbent independent Senator Angus King has declared victory.

The Associated Press has not yet officially announced the race for Maine's Senate seat, but King is leading with more than 52 percent of the vote.

Senator King says he's ready for a third term.

As an independent, he relies on the votes of both parties, even though he caucuses with the Democrats.

King faced challengers Republican Demi Kouzounas, Democrat David Costello and another independent, Jason Cherry.

Kouzounas admitted and released the following statement:

“As vote counting continues across Maine, I want to express my gratitude to everyone who supported our campaign. It was an honor to give a voice to Maine's middle class, small business owners, seniors and rural communities. Together we stood up for the Mainers who deserve a champion.

Thank you to my incredible supporters and volunteers. Their passion and hard work have proven that the American dream is worth fighting for.

I extend my sincere congratulations to Senator King. Even though it is clear that the result will not be in our favor, my work does not end there. I remain resolute in my commitment to a stronger, more prosperous Maine and will ensure that the issues we address continue to shape the future of our state. I will never stop fighting for a Maine with more opportunities and stronger communities for all.

Thank you, Maine.”

King is 80 years old. By the time he completes another round in the Senate, he would be 86 years old. But he says he's ready to return to Washington with his slogan, “Let's get it done.”
