Republican Donald Trump was elected the 47th president of the United States on Wednesday, NBC News predicted, an extraordinary comeback for a former president who refused to accept defeat four years ago, sparked a violent insurrection at the U.S. Capitol on felony charges was convicted and survived two assassination attempts.

When is Inauguration Day?

Inauguration Day occurs every four years on January 20th (or January 21st if January 20th falls on a Sunday). In 2025, January 20th falls on a Monday. The inauguration ceremony will take place at the US Capitol in Washington, DC.

What is the presidential oath of office?

The vice president-elect is sworn in first and repeats the same oath of office that has been administered to senators, representatives, and other federal employees since 1884:

“I solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will show her true faith and loyalty; that I will undertake this obligation voluntarily and without any obligation.” and that I will perform well and faithfully the duties of the office which I am about to assume: “So help me, God.”

Later, the President-elect takes the following oath under Article II, Section I of the U.S. Constitution:

“I solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully discharge the office of President of the United States and to preserve, protect and defend to the best of my ability the Constitution of the United States.”

What events will take place on Inauguration Day?

The inauguration is planned by the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies (JCCIC). Opening events include the swearing-in ceremony, inaugural address and passport verification. Find out more about each JCCIC event.

How do you get tickets to the presidential inauguration?

The Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies is making a limited number of inauguration cards available to the public through members of Congress. Tickets are free and allow you to be in person on the grounds of the U.S. Capitol as the President and Vice President are sworn in on January 20, 2025.

Tickets will be available from your members of Congress in the weeks leading up to the inauguration. Some members may begin accepting ticket requests earlier.
