Democratic U.S. Rep. Ruben Gallego is poised to become the first Hispanic from Arizona to serve in the U.S. Senate.

Not bad for a boy who grew up poor and worked as a janitor and in a meat factory to help his single mother.

You could say he's a fighter, he graduated from Harvard University, served in naval combat and in Congress.

“As a child, I slept on our living room floor so my sisters could have beds,” Gallego said Tuesday night. He appeared confident, adding that he would soon face the U.S. Senate.

The race has not yet been called, but early results showed him leading Republican opponent Kari Lake by more than 61,000 votes.

If this victory holds, it would be monumental. Defeating Lake, Donald Trump's protégé and election denier, is no small feat.

It appears voters have had enough of Lake, who has yet to accept that she lost her 2022 gubernatorial bid to Gov. Katie Hobbs.

At least Arizona residents, who also appeared to favor Donald Trump as the presidential candidate in the early voting results, came to their senses and saw Gallego as the best choice.
