Georgia's 16 electoral votes make it one of the most important swing states this fall.

Georgia was reliably Republican for decades, with the exception of a few races where Southern Democrats (Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton) were on the ticket. But in recent years the state has become increasingly blue, thanks to population growth in the Atlanta area and the fact that some disaffected Republicans in suburban areas voted against former President Donald Trump. In 2020, Joe Biden won the state by two-tenths of a percentage point (11,779 votes), one of the narrowest victories in the country that year.

Georgia was at the center of Trump's attempts to overturn the 2020 election results. In January 2021, in an hour-long phone call, Trump pressured Republican Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger to reverse the state's already certified election results and cases against him. During the call, Trump told Raffensperger, “What I want to do is this. 'I just want to find 11,780 votes, which is one more than we have because we won the state.'

A Fulton County grand jury has indicted Trump and 18 others in a case related to attempts to overturn the 2020 election results. In the indictment, prosecutor Fani Willis accuses Trump and his co-defendants of conspiring to unlawfully change the outcome of the election by plotting to create a list of fake voters and pressure various state and local officials to overturn the election to overturn and illegally access voting systems. A rural district is said to be trying, among other things, to “find” evidence of fraud.
