Patrick Mahomes on new Chiefs teammate DeAndre Hopkins after two-touchdown night: 'He's going to get better'

Hopkins, a former Houston Texans and Arizona Cardinals star, was acquired in a trade from the Tennessee Titans two weeks ago. He joins back-to-back Super Bowl champions and has seven 1,000-yard seasons, five Pro Bowls and three All-Pro honors.

Hopkins is unlikely to regain his top form, but at the same time Monday's performance captures the imagination.

Mahomes was the 14th^Th(!) Quarterback who threw one touchdown for Hopkins in his career. That list includes Brandon Weeden, Tom Savage, Brock Osweiler and TJ Yates, as well as Deshaun Watson and Kyler Murray.

Could Mahomes and Hopkins have something special brewing as the undefeated Chiefs continue their quest for a three-peat?

Somehow, despite being in triple coverage, Nuk managed to catch a 35-yard pass from Mahomes in the second quarter. According to Next Gen Stats, the completion probability was 12.3%. It was Mahomes' most unlikely completion since Week 16, 2018.

“You’ve seen DeAndre make those catches throughout his career,” Reid said. “Two great players throw to each other, sometimes great things happen. So it’s not what we thought it would be, but it was a good ending.”

Two Kareem Hunt runs later, Mahomes found Hopkins in the back of the end zone for his first touchdown as a Chief. Hopkins responded with one Remember the Titans touchdown celebration.

It was easy to remember what a top-notch Hopkins looked like on Monday and what Mahomes can do when he has a top-notch WR1 in his arsenal.
