Jason Kelce apologized on television for repeating an anti-gay slur that a heckler directed at his brother Travis Kelce, whose phone he destroyed in an incident that went viral on social media over the weekend.

“Everyone saw what happened,” Kelce began at the top of ESPN Monday night countdown transmitted. “I am not happy with everything that happened. I'm not proud of it. In a heated moment I decided to meet hate with hate and I just don't think that's a productive thing to do, I really don't. I don’t think it creates a discourse and that it’s (not) the right way to do things.”

In a series of widely-watched clips on Saturday, a man was heard mocking Jason Kelce when he used an anti-gay slur against his brother in reference to his relationship with singer Taylor Swift. In response, the former Philadelphia Eagles player turned around, slammed the person's phone on the ground and repeated the same insult. The incident occurred at the Ohio State-Penn State game at Beaver Stadium in State College, Penn.

“In that moment, I fell to a level I shouldn’t have,” he continued. “So, I think the bottom line is that I try to live my life by the golden rule, that's what I've always been taught. I try to treat people with decency and respect and I will continue to do that, even if I didn't succeed this week.”

Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce has been dating pop star Swift since September last year. The musician and the athlete were seen out and about at various football games along with family members. Swift came to the game between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium in Missouri this evening to support Travis Kelce. (His team won 30:24 after overtime.)

“We have to concentrate on one game, of course on a duel. I don’t think this is the platform to necessarily elaborate on that,” Jason Kelce said in his closing remarks.
