Koby Brea: What to expect from the Dayton transfer

The Kentucky Wildcats hit the transfer portal jackpot when they added Kobe Brea to the 2024-2025 roster. The former Dayton Flyer was one of the most sought-after players available this offseason.

Everyone wants a sniper these days, and Brea absolutely fits the bill.

• Recruiting ranking: Brea was unranked out of high school but was rated as a four-star transfer option by 247 Sports. He was widely considered the best shooter available in the transfer portal.

In 2024, the Washington Heights native was named the Atlantic 10 Conference Sixth Man of the Year, an honor he also received the previous year.

Hopefully you agree that Brea shot an incredible 49.8% from behind the three-point line. Yes, you read that correctly.

Knocking down nearly half of his attempts from distance certainly caught the attention of every major program in America, but ultimately it was Mark Pope who sealed the deal and brought Brea to Lexington for his final season.

It's possible, but I don't expect him to come off the bench like he did in Dayton. I would expect to see Brea in the starting lineup, but who knows, it could be a situation where he feels more comfortable coming off the bench given the success he's had over the last two seasons.

Wait, is there any chance that one of Britain's best shooters won't start?

I expect Brea to start a few games this season, but his typical backup role could play a role in Mark Pope's rotation.

I think now we'll insert the standard basketball answer: “It's not about who starts, it's about who finishes.” Several short practice clips were posted this offseason, and many featured a Koby Brea three-pointer.

One can only assume that a player like him will thrive in Mark Pope's system of insane ball and player movement.

In fact, I don't think anyone in college basketball will be shocked if Brea has a breakthrough All-SEC season in Lexington.

“Devin Booker is my favorite player. Just being in that environment with so many greats and every day when you walk into the gym the first thing you see are those banners, and as a player that's motivation enough,” Brea said after committing to Kentucky had.

Projected role

No. 4 has a chance for a special season if everything goes as planned. Today's basketball teams must have shooters who can score high. It would be absurd if Brea was able to even come close to maintaining his scoring average from Dayton.

Personally, I think it will be important for him to get off to a good start at the start of the season to take some of the pressure off his shoulders.

Look for Brea to come off the bench and play around 17-20 minutes per game while leading the team in 3-point shooting.
