When do polls open and close in Michigan on Election Day?

We made it. We survived the nonstop ads and campaign stops. The debates are long in the past and the candidates are reaching their final stops – many of them in Michigan.

Election Day is here and although nearly 3.2 million people have already voted, there are still another 4 million registered voters who have not yet made it to the polls.

Those who vote in person go to the local town hall, elementary school or church to make their voice heard.

Polls will open for in-person voting at 7 a.m. local time on Tuesday. Keep in mind that there are three counties in the far western Upper Peninsula that observe Central Time, so their polls open an hour later than most other states.

Across Michigan, polls close at 8:00 p.m. local time on Election Day – meaning you must be in line by 8:00 p.m. for your vote to count.

Voters who requested a mail-in ballot but haven't yet cast it can still do so — just don't send it in the mail. Instead, take it to your local office or polling place and have it tabulated on Election Day.

Election Day voter turnout this year will be an interesting number to watch. This is the first year early voting has been available in Michigan, and on Monday Secretary of State Jocely Benson announced that more than 3.2 million people have already voted.

Benson also explained when the results will be announced, with the first round of voting arriving at 9 p.m. While polls close at 8 p.m. across most of the state, three counties in the Upper Peninsula are in the central time zone, causing a delay in the state releasing its numbers.

Final unofficial results will be available by midday on Wednesday.
