LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Lancaster County’s election commissioner is calling a social media post from the weekend “false and misleading.”

In a news release Monday, Election Commissioner Todd Wiltgen said a “group of malicious conspiracy theorists” posted a video of a man returning his ballot.

According to the elections office, the group “falsely implied” that the voter had done something wrong.

Election officials reviewed surveillance video from the mailbox and identified the voter.

The “young man” returned his ballot for his first presidential election and took a selfie to “commemorate” the milestone.

“It is shameful and un-American to intimidate and threaten anyone for exercising their right to vote,” Wiltgen said in the press release.

The elections office contacted the Lincoln Police Department after seeing comments on the social media posts threatening harm to the voter.

“It is unfortunate that this group spreads false and misleading information to deceive the public and undermine confidence in our elections,” Wiltgen said. “You should remove the post and apologize immediately.”
